Okuko Onye Uwa Ceremony in Awka
Okuko Onye Uwa Ceremony in Awka Culture
Marriage between ANAGBOGU and NWOSU both from Awka October 15, 2022
By Prince C. Nebe, Engr.,
Awka Culture requires this Okuko Onye Uwa ceremony to be performed before we recognize any marriage between an Awka woman and a man. This is performed on the day of the traditional marriage performed at the brides home. It is like a sacrifice that solidifies the marriage.
Because the wife’s kindred has accepted the man, because he has completed all obligations to take his wife, then a handover is done. Handover is when the wife kindred hands their daughter over to the man in a marriage.
If you are an Awka woman, married but this ceremony of OKUKO ONYE UWA has not been performed, it is required. If offspring are produced without this ceremony, they belong to the wife’s kindred. PERIOD.
